A SCOTS couple will embark on a 17,000 mile trip from the North Pole to the South Pole in an electric car.
Chris and Julie Ramsay will travel through 14 countries in an electric car in a world first.
The Aberdeen globetrotters are taking off on the polar trek to raise awareness of climate change and show the ability of electric motors.
The husband-and-wife duo will take a custom-built all-electric Nissan Ariya from Magnetic North Pole location in the Canadian Arctic to the South Pole in Antarctica.
They will go through North, Central and South America, before finally crossing to the Antarctic.
Chris and Julie’s adventure will set off in March and plan to be the first people ever to drive from pole to pole,
The couple will be on their polar expedition for almost a year and will face every type of weather condition.
Chris and Julie used to work in the oil and gas industry but have since labelled themselves « full-time adventures. »
Ahead of their extraordinary expedition, they spoke about the challenges they will face.
Julie told STV News: “We are going to go through every weather possible in terms of temperature and road terrain.
“From the extreme polar terrain to the mountainous terrains of Andes and Patagonia.”
And Chris told the broadcaster: “The North Pole is the home of the polar bear, so we will be treading as lightly as we can through those regions.
“But it’s 80% sea ice and that’s why we need to leave the Arctic by April because unfortunately, sea ice is melting.”
And they have even worked with partners to make sure they can keep their car on the move in places where there aren’t many ways to charge it.
They will tow a trailer with a portable wind turbine – that will have 5kW of power.
And the electric car expedition is not their first trip around ther globe, as the pair travelled 10,000 miles from London to southern Serbia for the Mongol Rally in 2017.
The pair are still fundraising for the global adventure before setting off next month.
