Luxury treehouses for tourists, modern apartments in a coastal town and a revamped petrol filling station are among the planning applications which have been submitted to Cornwall Council this week. Every week more than 100 applications are validated by the council and we have selected some of the more interesting proposals.
All planning applications submitted to the council have to be validated and are available for inspection by the public. Anyone is also allowed to submit comments about the applications – whether in support or objection.
The majority of planning applications are decided by planning officers at Cornwall Council under what are called delegated powers. However some applications will go before elected councillors who sit on planning committees.

Treehouses for holiday accommodation
A company is seeking planning permission to build two treehouses which could be used by tourists. Crown and Canopy has submitted plans for a site at Trefenton at Pillaton, near Saltash.
It wants to build the two treehouses which it says are “essentially elevated cabins” which could be used as holiday accommodation. The units would be targeted at couples and be used year-round.
The proposals would be the extension of an existing holiday let business with two holiday cottages already in operation on the site. The new cabins would have self-catering facilities with a kitchen, bedroom, toilet and shower.
A planning statement issued with the application states: “The proposed development would enable the applicants to derive a sustainable income from an eco-tourism-based business that complements and enhances the existing, more traditional holiday lets.
“This expansion will support the local economy by allowing more overnight visitors to stay in the area, thus supporting local businesses and services. It will also diversify the tourist accommodation provision through delivery of high-quality, outdoor based luxury retreats.
“The applicants are keen to offer bespoke and unusual accommodation in this beautiful location and allow guests to benefit from a back-to-nature break. There is easy access to the Cornish countryside, coastline and various cultural and historical attractions nearby.”

Modern apartments to replace coach house
A planning application has been submitted to demolish a 19th century coach house in Looe and replace it with seven apartments. Stormseal SW Ltd has applied for permission to build the new development on the site at Millpool.
In a design and access statement submitted with the plans it is explained that the existing coach house dates from the 19th century and has previously been used as a garage with a flat above. It states that: “The building has been much altered over the years and very little remains of the original fabric.”
It goes on to state: “The proposed new apartments will provide high quality accommodation for permanent residents of Looe. They have been designed to respond to the topography of the site and the unique character of the Millpool setting with its gabled terraces rising up a wooded slope.”
The development would have two blocks of apartments with one block containing five apartments and the other with two. Six of the apartments would have two bedrooms each and there would be a four-bedroom penthouse. A ground floor car park is also proposed.

Plans to upgrade filling station
New plans have been revealed to upgrade a filling station which will include demolishing and rebuilding the sales building and installing new electric vehicle charging points. Shell has submitted the proposals for its filling station on the A39 at Playing Place, near Truro, to Cornwall Council.
The filling station has been in place since the 1990s and the planning documents state that it has been some time since it was last upgraded and that the infrastructure on site it now in need of modernisation.
Under the proposals the existing sales building and forecourt would be demolished and replaced with all new facilities. As well as new fuel filling points for up to six cars there will also be fast recharging facilities for up to eight electric vehicles.
The proposed new sales building will be larger than the existing facilities and would include customer toilets and a cashpoint. The documents state: “The existing shop is compact and cramped and is not an ideal environment for customers or those working within it. The enlarged sales building will help to address this, whilst also providing more customer toilets, including disabled facilities.”
