Britain’s electric car revolution will run out of gas if there aren’t more charging points, warns Ford boss

The boss of Ford has warned that the switch to electric cars could be knocked off course by a lack of charging points.

The Government has laid out plans to end the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, providing at least 300,000 charging points in the process.

But the latest vehicle licensing data suggests electric vehicles (EVs) are being produced at a much faster rate than the rollout of charging points can handle.

Lisa Brankin, the managing director of Ford in the UK and Ireland, warned that drivers could be put off buying EVs if they see massive queues at charging points.

‘If we are going to switch to 100 per cent electric vehicles, we really need to have a wealth of public charging infrastructure and I’m not sure that there is a plan in place to allow that to happen,’ she told the Financial Times.

‘We [Ford] have spent billions of dollars on electric vehicles, it is now coming fast, and we need this.’

Brankin’s comments come as experts question the spread of EV chargers across the country.

Nearly a third of Britain’s charging points are in London, with Westminster having more than Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle upon Tyne, Leeds, Sheffield and Birmingham combined.

Andrew Brem, general manager of Uber UK, said it was a ‘social embarrassment’ that electric vehicle charging points were concentrated in wealthier parts of the country.
