PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The push for electric vehicles has been growing across the country in recent years and now AAA Northeast has joined the charge in its own way.

AAA’s Providence location recently introduced two electric cars to its fleet for student driver training as part of its growing push for clean energy and reducing greenhouse gases.

On top of putting drivers behind the wheel of electric vehicles, AAA Northeast is also increasing efforts to point drivers to charging station locations. A recent AAA consumer survey showed that 25% of American drivers are considering an electric vehicle for their next purchase.

Among those who reported interest in purchasing an electric vehicle, 77% cited their primary concern as the cost of gasoline.

“This is the future. It’s a whole new driving experience with these cars,” said AAA Northeast’s director of driver training Steve Rossetti. “More people are buying electric cars and more states are mandating that new car sales in the future are going to be all-electric. So we’re trying to stay ahead of the curve.”

In December 2021, the Biden administration issued an executive order for most federal vehicle purchases to be electric by 2035.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, a typical car emits about 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year, while AAA’s more eco-friendly cars are about 1.43 metric tons.

In addition to electric car driver training, field crews will start carrying mobile charging stations for dead battery calls.
