The Cupra Born hatchback is now one of two in its segment to have been awarded five stars by ANCAP against the 2020-2022 rating criteria.

Scoring particularly highly for Adult Occupant protection (at 93 per cent), the Born electric car beats the Fiat 500e’s four stars, and has undergone more recent and stringent testing than the Nissan Leaf, which achieved five stars under different testing in 2019.

The Cupra Born also scored maximum points for “protection of child occupants in the two physical crash tests” and overall was given 89 per cent for Child Occupant Protection.

Its 80 per cent score for Safety Assist comes with “a mix of results for the Born’s ability to prevent or mitigate the severity of a crash with pedestrians and cyclists” and is therefore joined by a 73 per cent score for Vulnerable Road User Protection.

ANCAP noted that “its AEB system does not react to pedestrians in reverse or forwards-turning scenarios and hence these were not tested or scored”.

“It’s great to see another fully electric model enter our market with the maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating,” said ANCAP Chief Executive Carla Hoorweg. 

“The momentum for safe and green models is growing, and this rating will provide further confidence to consumers and  regulators to embrace safety and environmental credentials as a non-negotiable package,” Ms Hoorweg added.
