The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House Netflix New Series! This Japanese series is acclaimed creator and Palme d’Or winner Hirokazu Koreeda’s first Netflix production. Based on the bestselling manga Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san, it is set in the geisha district of Kyoto, where Kiyo (Nana Mori) becomes a Makanai (person who cooks meals) at a house where Maiko (apprentice geishas) live together. The series depicts the everyday life of Kiyo and her childhood friend who accompanied her to Kyoto, amid a vibrant world of geisha and Maiko courtesans, and delicious food.

Vikings: Valhalla Netflix Season Premiere! Turner Classic Movies’ monthlong Thursday night showcase of films that have touched on the Jewish experience in various ways, and across a number of themes, continues tonight with three features informed in various degrees by Jewish humor. First, in 1968’s Bye Bye Braverman, directed by Sidney Lumet and based on Wallace Markfield’s novel To an Early Grave, four Jewish intellectuals in New York City (played by George Segal, Jack Warden, Joseph Wiseman and Sorrell Booke) embark on an often absurdist odyssey when they decide to carpool to their friend’s funeral. Next, The Angel Levine (1970), based on Bernard Malamud’s short story, stars Zero Mostel as Morris Mishkin, a poor, elderly Jewish tailor who is struggling in life. He prays to God for help and receives it in the form of Alexander Levine (Harry Belafonte, who also produced the film), who claims to be a Jewish angel in training needing to perform a miracle to attain full angel status, but Morris has trouble believing. Finally, in the Best Picture Oscar-winning Annie Hall (1977), Best Director and Best Original Screenplay (with Marshall Brickman) winner and Best Actor nominee Woody Allen plays Alvy Singer, a divorced Jewish comedian who reflects on his relationship with his titular ex-lover (Best Actress Oscar winner Diane Keaton).

Female Detectives — Part 2: Torchy Blane Gets Her Way TCM, beginning at 8pm Catch a Classic! Turner Classic Movies offers another evening of big-screen fictional female mystery-solvers tonight with five of the nine Torchy Blane films that were produced between 1937-39. These roughly hourlong productions, popular as the bottom halves of double features, found daring, fast-talking and wisecracking newspaper reporter Torchy (played most often by Glenda Farrell), always with an instinct for a scoop, unraveling a mystery and staying several steps ahead of her boyfriend, no-nonsense police detective Steve McBride (mostly played by Barton MacLane). See Torchy in action tonight when TCM airs the first five of these films that were produced. The initial four — Smart Blonde, Fly-Away Baby and The Adventurous Blonde, all from 1937, and 1938’s Blondes at Work — all feature Farrell as Torchy and MacLane as Steve, while Lola Lane and Paul Kelly step into those roles in the fifth title, Torchy Blane in Panama (1938).

White Heat TCM, 4:15pm Catch a Classic! James Cagney, who became a star nearly 20 years earlier with a legendary breakthrough performance in another memorable crime flick, The Public Enemy, gives an equally iconic turn in this Oscar-nominated 1949 gangster classic as coldblooded Cody Jarrett, a psychotic thug devoted to his hardboiled Ma (Margaret Wycherly). Bracingly directed by Raoul Walsh, this fast-paced film noir tracing Jarrett’s violent life in and out of jail is also a harrowing character study. Jarrett is a psychological time bomb ruled by impulse — he murders a wounded accomplice and revels in the act; neglects his sultry wife (Virginia Mayo); and adores his doting mother. It is among the most vivid screen performances of Cagney’s career, and shows that when it came to portraying such characters, the actor was “top of the world!”

In the second of three sequel films to the Hallmark original Wedding Veil trilogy, which were based on a book series by Lori Wilde, Emma (Autumn Reeser) and Paolo (Paolo Bernardini) navigate the perfect time to start a family while Emma bumps heads with the chair of her department and starts questioning her life choices. With some support from Paolo and a little help from the veil, Emma attempts to find the courage to stop planning and start doing.

How to Murder Your Husband: The Nancy Brophy Story Lifetime, 8pm Original Film! Lifetime’s latest original is based on a true crime story. Nancy Crampton-Brophy (Cybill Shepherd) seemed to have a knack for writing about murder. The Portland-based romance-thriller novelist authored books about tumultuous relationships and women protagonists who fantasized about killing their own husbands or fleeing their husbands and faking their own deaths. Hard to believe, but in 2022, Brophy was convicted of killing her own husband (played by Steve Guttenberg).

Navalny CNN, 9pm A favorite at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, this documentary investigates the 2020 attempted assassination of Vladimir Putin adversary Alexei Navalny. Filmmakers were granted exclusive access by Navalny and his family to document his physical recovery from poisoning at their secret location.

Rico to the Rescue HGTV, 9pm Firefighter and family man Josh is desperate to complete his home renovation and calls builder Rico León to help mediate with his contractor and get the project back on track.

Boys and Their Horses TCM, beginning at 8pm Catch a Classic! Stories about girls and their horses have been so frequent as to almost be cliché at this point, but there have also been a few notable tales about the relationships between boys and their horses, some of which have been adapted for the big screen. Turner Classic Movies has two of those tonight, beginning with The Black Stallion (1979), based on Walter Farley’s novel. It follows a boy (Kelly Reno) who is shipwrecked with a wild Arabian stallion off the coast of Africa in the 1940s. Eventually bonding with the equine, the boy trains the horse to race after they are rescued. The film costars Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee Mickey Rooney, who 35 years earlier had also starred in another famous horse-themed feature, 1944’s National Velvet. Tonight’s second film is My Friend Flicka (1943), an adaptation of Mary O’Hara’s novel. Young Roddy McDowall plays a boy who learns about life and responsibility after he is given the titular mustang filly to raise.

Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches: “The Dark Place” AMC, 9pm The second episode of the new series finds Rowan (Alexandra Daddario) out of control and unfit to perform surgeries after Ellie’s death. Her paranoia that someone is following her is proved true. In New Orleans, Deirdre (Annabeth Gish) and her mysterious companion Lasher (Jack Huston) work together to draw Rowan home.

NCIS: Los Angeles: “Best Seller” CBS, 9pm The NCIS team springs into action when Sam’s (LL Cool J) friend Tom (guest star David Paul Olsen) finds himself being hunted down by enemies from his past in the new episode “Best Seller.”

The Way Home Hallmark Channel, 9pm New Series! Andie MacDowell stars in this multigenerational family drama about single mother Kat Landry (Chyler Leigh), who, after some personal troubles, decides to return home to the small Canadian farm town of Port Haven with her 15-year-old daughter, Alice (Sadie Laflamme-Snow), who has never met her grandmother (MacDowell) due to a long estrangement. Immediately, things are not what anyone envisioned for the reunion.

The Last of Us HBO, 9pm New Series! Twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed, Joel (Pedro Pascal, The Mandalorian), a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie (Bella Ramsey, Game of Thrones) out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal and heartbreaking journey. The nine-episode series is based on the acclaimed video game of the same name.

Godfather of Harlem MGM+, 9pm Season Premiere! EPIX changes its name to MGM+ beginning today, and it’s marking the occasion with the return of this crime drama. In the 10-episode third season, Bumpy Johnson (Forest Whitaker) continues to battle for control of Harlem, going up against the Cuban mafia, the Italian mob, Latin assassins and the CIA. Vincent D’Onofrio and Ilfenesh Hadera also star.

All Creatures Great and Small: “Honeymoon’s Over” PBS, 9pm James (Nicholas Ralph) and Helen (Rachel Shenton) enter married life, while James settles in uneasily as Siegfried’s (Samuel West) partner at the clinic. Meanwhile, Tristan (Callum Woodhouse), too, must make new adjustments.

Your Honor Showtime, 9pm Season Premiere! Bryan Cranston returns to his role as Michael Desiato, a respected New Orleans judge whose upstanding life is derailed when his teenage son’s accidental hit-and-run killing of the son of notorious crime boss Jimmy Baxter (Michael Stuhlbarg) led to a high-stakes game of lies, deceit and impossible choices. “We’re humans, we make mistakes,” tells Cranston of this story of redemption. “If you have the courage to own up to it and be accountable for your mistakes and your faults, it is actually liberating. And when we experience that in real life, when someone comes clean, there’s a tremendous amount of empathy that is created, and that’s great for dramatic storytelling.”

MLK Day Movie Marathon TCM, beginning at 6am Catch a Classic! First on this epic list of films is the Langston Hughes poem-inspired Blood of Jesus (1941), a fantasy drama about an atheist (Spencer Williams) who accidentally shoots his Baptist wife (Cathryn Caviness), causing her to die and travel to a crossroads where she is tempted by the devil. This is followed by Dudley Murphy’s film The Emperor Jones (1933), which was loosely based on a play by Eugene O’Neill, and centers around an ambitious man named Brutus (Paul Robeson) who escapes from jail and finds himself the emperor of a Caribbean island. Next, an educated Black woman (Evelyn Preer) with a shocking past dedicates herself to helping a school for impoverished youth after she’s abandoned by her fiancé in Within Our Gates (1920), and the oldest son of a loving and hardworking family of sharecroppers comes of age in the Depression-era South after his father is imprisoned for stealing food in the Oscar-nominated film Sounder (1972), based on a novel by William H. Armstrong. Following that is the Dorothy Dandridge-led film Bright Road (1953), which features a nearly all-Black cast, about an idealistic young teacher at the beginning of her career trying to help a problematic student. It’s also the first film appearance by Harry Belafonte, who costars as the principal. Next up is The Learning Tree (1969), based on a Gordon Parks novel, which follows the life of a poor Black 14-year-old in Kansas as he learns about love, fear and racial injustice, and Freedom on My Mind (1994), which chronicles the Mississippi voter registration drive from 1961-64. At 8pm, TCM will premiere the Emmy Award-winning The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman (1974), a story of a woman born into slavery in the 1850s who becomes part of the civil rights movement a century later. Then, a young Sidney Poitier stars as a Black Philadelphia police detective who is mistakenly suspected of a local murder while passing through a Mississippi town in the Oscar-winning film In the Heat of the Night (1967), based on a novel by John Ball.

The Price of Glee Investigation Discovery, beginning at 9pm; also streams on discovery+ New Series! The cultural phenomenon and hit musical series Glee catapulted a cast of relative unknowns into international superstardom. But the show that sparked a new era of acceptance was also saddled with extreme devastation on the inside. Endless scandals, tabloid gossip and fatal tragedies plagued the rising stars on what was supposed to be the most joyful show on television. Stonehouse BritBox New Series! This three-part drama is based on the extraordinary rise and fall of British MP John Stonehouse (Matthew Macfadyen). As a high-flying member of Prime Minister Harold Wilson’s (Kevin R. McNally) Labour government and a seemingly devoted family man, Stonehouse’s perfect life spirals out of control in the early 1970s amid rumors of fraud and espionage, with events leading him to Miami, Melbourne and, eventually, the dock of London’s highest criminal court. Keeley Hawes and Emer Heatley costar.

The Rookie: “Death Notice” ABC, 8pm Officer Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and Celina (Lisseth Chavez) are enlisted to stand guard at a hospital when a dangerous prisoner must have surgery and they suspect there is more to it than meets the eye. Meanwhile, Aaron (Tru Valentino) gets Lopez (Alyssa Diaz) and Harper (Mekia Cox) to help him investigate a string of home robberies.

The Resident FOX, 8pm Season Finale! Medical drama The Resident concludes Season 6 tonight with the finale episode “All Hands on Deck,” in which a heavy storm causes a helicopter crash, and Sammie comes into the emergency room with a high fever.

Night Court NBC, 8pm New Series! This follow-up to NBC’s 1984-92 sitcom Night Court stars Melissa Rauch as eternally optimistic Judge Abby Stone, who follows in the footsteps of her revered late father, Judge Harry Stone (played in the original series by Harry Anderson, who passed away in 2018), when she takes on the challenge of overseeing the night shift of a Manhattan arraignment court. John Larroquette reprises his multiple Emmy-winning role of Dan Fielding, who this time is enlisted as the court’s public defender, rather than prosecutor. The comedy launches with back-to-back episodes.

Finding Your Roots With Henry Louis Gates Jr.: “Secret Lives” PBS, 8pm Henry Louis Gates Jr. helps comedians Carol Burnett and Niecy Nash decode scandals in their roots, exploring secrets that their ancestors sought to conceal.

Star of the Month: Marion Davies TCM, beginning at 8pm Catch a Classic! TCM continues its January celebration of the scandal-plagued silent film actress Marion Davies. This appropriately nicknamed “Queen of the Screen” returns tonight beginning with The Bachelor Father (1931), a redemption story of a curmudgeonly old man who invites his three illegitimate adult children to live with him, followed by Five and Ten (1931), based on the 1929 Fannie Hurst novel of the same name, in which a young woman named Jenny (Davies) moves to New York City with her family and falls in love with an engaged man. A scandalous love triangle is the focus of the next film, Blondie of the Follies (1932), in which the friendship between two young women (Davies and Billie Dove) begins to fall apart when one wins a role in a Broadway show and the other’s boyfriend (Robert Montgomery) falls for her. Polly of the Circus (1932), a film adaptation of the play by Margaret Mayo, finds Davies playing an injured trapeze performer opposite the iconic Clark Gable, who plays a minister and a love interest. Davies is a love-struck teacher who pursues a radio singer (the legendary Bing Crosby) to Hollywood and gets hired to join a chorus in Going Hollywood (1933), then, lastly, in Operator 13 (1934), Davies plays Gail Loveless, a spy who meets and falls in love with a Confederate captain (Gary Cooper) during the Civil War.

The Rookie: Feds: “Out for Blood” ABC, 9pm As the unit investigates a murder victim whose body has been drained of blood, the gruesome case catches the attention of a true crime show, and Brendon (Kevin Zegers) shares his “Vampire Cop” expertise to help solve the case.

New Amsterdam NBC, beginning at 9pm Series Finale! The medical drama comes to an end after five seasons with two back-to-back episodes tonight. First, in “Right Place,” Max (Ryan Eggold) and Wilder (Sandra Mae Frank) face a dilemma over approvals for a revolutionary cancer drug as Max learns a secret about his own bout with cancer; Reynolds (Jocko Sims) goes the extra mile to correct a dire medical situation; and Iggy (Tyler Labine) tries desperately to help a woman in need, but finds the system is working against him. Then, everyone’s story reaches a surprising, yet inevitable, conclusion in the series finale episode, “How Can I Help?”

American Experience: “Zora Neale Hurston: Claiming a Space” PBS, 9pm This biography explores the life of author Zora Neale Hurston, whose groundbreaking anthropological work would challenge assumptions about race, gender and cultural superiority. Best remembered for her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, Hurston was a key figure of the Harlem Renaissance. But even as she gained renown as a writer, she pursued anthropological studies at Barnard College, becoming the college’s first Black female graduate, and throughout her career, she struggled for recognition in two worlds — literary and scientific.

1,000-lb Sisters TLC, 9pm Season Premiere! The weight-loss struggles and daily lives of sisters Amy Slaton-Halterman and Tammy Slaton of Dixon, Kentucky, have been the focus of TLC’s reality series, now in its fourth season. After surviving a near-death experience, cameras follow Tammy as she struggles to cope with her new reality, where she makes a life-altering decision that no one saw coming. With baby No. 2 on the way, Amy feels her family is complete, but soon realizes being an overweight mom may prove to be too much.

Will Trent: “Don’t Let It Happen Again” ABC, 10pm Will (Ramón Rodríguez) and Faith’s (Iantha Richardson) investigation into a small-town murder has large implications when a connection is drawn to a covered-up cold case. Meanwhile, the death of a security guard perplexes Angie (Erika Christensen).

Nature: “WildHeart” PBS, 8pm The Scots pine tree, the symbol of Scotland, stands firm against the assaults of a fickle climate and is at the center of a complex ecosystem offering a home to an abundance of wildlife, from the iconic golden eagle to the feisty red squirrel. But as one of Scotland’s longest-living species, the tree has also been witness to the island’s history. This film depicts 500 years in the life of a Scots pine and its ever-changing wild highland home.

TCM Spotlight: Car Chases TCM, beginning at 8pm Catch a Classic! A tale of redemption is at the heart of the 1980 musical comedy film The Blues Brothers, which stars John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as brothers in Chicago who set out on a mission to prevent the foreclosure of the orphanage where they were raised by getting their blues band back together. The characters were developed from a recurring musical sketch on the long-running NBC series Saturday Night Live. The Bank Dick (1940) stars W.C. Fields, who also wrote the screenplay, as a California drunk who accidentally thwarts a bank robbery and ends up a security guard there. In the following film, the Oscar-winning comedy It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) starring Ethel Merman and Milton Berle, a reckless driver causes a massive traffic jam in the California desert and in his dying breath admits to a hidden stolen fortune, causing the other motorists to travel across the state in search of it.

The Goldbergs: “Amadoofus” ABC, 8:30pm Barring mixed emotions from the family, a special someone express their infatuation with Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey). Meanwhile, Dave Kim (Kenny Ridwan) returns to Jenkintown with some exciting news.

Brother vs. Brother No Rules: “Who’s King of the Kitchens” HGTV, 9pm Drew and Jonathan Scott each renovate their kitchen and dining room but run into space and structure issues. Alex Guarnaschelli (Alex vs. America) and Veronica Valencia (Revealed) stop by to judge the rooms and name a challenge winner. The winner is awarded a romantic dinner from a famous Michelin chef.

Chicago Fire: “How Does It End?” NBC, 9pm Truck and squad clash after a tense call rescuing a doomsday prepper; Herrmann (David Eigenberg) struggles with Cindy’s (Robyn Coffin) diagnosis; and Violet (Hanako Greensmith) gives Brett (Kara Killmer) and Gallo (Alberto Rosende) dating advice.

Tough as Nails: “That’s a Safety Hazard” CBS, 10pm Season 3 competitor and diesel mechanic Quincey Walker returns to guide the crews through a series of auto service challenges in the new episode “That’s a Safety Hazard.”

Dirty Old Cars History, 10pm New Series! This half-hour series, which kicks off with back-to-back episodes, follows top detailing shops across the nation that take on the task of rescuing classic cars trapped under layers of muck and decay. In the series premiere episode, an ’81 Camaro Z28 covered in dirt and filth needs a major transformation to get it back on the road, and a ’72 Ford Maverick encrusted with years of mold and debris must be meticulously revitalized for a client with sentimental attachment.

Chicago P.D.: “I Can Let You Go” NBC, 10pm Sean O’Neal (Jefferson White) surprises Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) with a call from prison, revealing sensitive information. While Upton grapples with how to keep O’Neal at a distance, the team quickly mobilizes to stop a crime in progress before it is too late.

Grown-ish Freeform, 10:30pm New Episodes! This Black-ish spinoff returns from its Season 5 winter hiatus with new episodes, starting with “Fool’s Paradise,” in which Zoey (Yara Shahidi) and Aaron (Trevor Jackson) have an unexpected run-in at the San Francisco airport, leading them to unpack the highs and lows of their long-distance relationship.

Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre Netflix New Series! Twenty chilling tales penned by horror manga master Junji Ito, all with the shared theme of madness, are adapted in this anime series.

That ’90s Show Netflix New Series! This direct spinoff of the hit 1998-2006 sitcom That ’70s Show is set in 1995, and goes back to Point Place, Wisconsin, where Leia Forman (Callie Haverda), daughter of Eric and Donna (Topher Grace and Laura Prepon, who, along with Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis and Wilmer Valderrama, make guest appearances in their original roles), is spending the summer with grandparents Kitty and Red (Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith, reprising their characters as series regulars). There, Leia bonds with a new generation of Point Place kids.

NBA Basketball NBA TV & TNT, beginning at 3pm Live The NBA visits France for a matchup between the Chicago Bulls and the Detroit Pistons at Accor Arena in Paris on NBA TV. TNT’s primetime doubleheader has the Golden State Warriors at the Boston Celtics and the Brooklyn Nets at the Phoenix Suns.

Walker: “Buffering” The CW, 8pm Cordell (Jared Padalecki) and Cassie (Ashley Reyes) intervene in a hostage situation at a server farm, and August (Kale Culley) tries to smooth things over with his grandparents.

Christina in the Country: “Diamond in the Rough” HGTV, 8pm With three young boys and a one-week-old baby girl, Nick and Kristen enlist Christina Hall’s help to transform their dark and dysfunctional kitchen. Special Theme: The Jewish Experience TCM, beginning at 8pm Catch a Classic! TCM has dedicated every Thursday in January to showcasing films that have touched on the Jewish experience. Included in the lineup for this evening are the following five films: Golden Globe nominee Crossing Delancey (1988), about a single woman (Amy Irving) in Manhattan who meets a man (Peter Riegert) through her Jewish grandmother’s (Reizl Bozyk) matchmaker; Over the Brooklyn Bridge (1984), in which a Jewish deli owner in Brooklyn (Elliott Gould) asks his uncle for a loan, but must give up his Gentile girlfriend (Margaux Hemingway) in order to get it; longtime roommates and friends (Melanie Mayron and Anita Skinner) face challenges to their relationship when one gets engaged and moves out of their New York City apartment in Girlfriends (1978); a Polish rabbi (Gene Wilder) befriends a bank robber with a heart of gold (Harrison Ford) on his way to San Francisco in The Frisco Kid (1979), an unusual adventure comedy about a pair of unlikely friends; lastly, the Oscar-nominated Au Revoir les Enfants (1987), which tells the story of a Catholic boarding school in World War II-era France hiding a Jewish student from the Nazis and is based on a true incident from writer/director Louis Malle’s life.

Mystic UPtv, 8pm Season Premiere! Set on the fictional peninsula of Kauri Point, this New Zealand-set family drama tells the story of Issie Brown (Macey Chipping) and her newfound relationships with the town’s teen horse riders, and their efforts to save their area from industrial development. Season 2 takes place three months after the events of the first season. In the premiere episode, the gang uncovers a new threat to the forest and the wild herd of horses, while Issie’s visions from Mystic become more mysterious than ever, and a new arrival in town causes trouble for her and Dan (Max Crean).

Walker Independence: “Strange Bedfellows” The CW, 9pm Abby (Katherine McNamara) starts to question everything she thought to be true, and Gus (Philemon Chambers) makes a move no one sees coming.

Married to Real Estate: “Big Dreams From Beantown” HGTV, 9pm First-time homebuyers John and Shavon just moved from Boston and are looking for a house that checks all the boxes. Open concept and a modern design with earthy tones are a must, but more importantly, the house must pass their dog Oliver’s “vibe check.” While Egypt Sherrod and Mike Jackson push the budget to transform the couple’s house into the ideal dream home, they also make a bet about whether their own family dog belongs indoors or outside.

Truth Be Told Apple TV+ Season Premiere! As this NAACP Image Award-winning drama returns for Season 3, Octavia Spencer returns as investigative-reporter-turned-true-crime-podcaster Poppy Scoville to take on a new case. Gabrielle Union joins the cast as an unorthodox principal who teams with Poppy to help keep the names of several young missing Black girls in the public eye while chasing down leads to a suspected sex-trafficking ring that may have ensnared them. Other returning cast members include Mekhi Phifer, David Lyons and Ron Cephas Jones. New episodes are available Fridays.

Represent Netflix New Series! Jean-Pascal Zadi cocreated, directed and stars in this French comedy as Stéphane Blé, an idealistic educator who is inadvertently thrust into France’s presidential race.

Shahmaran Netflix New Series! In this Turkish mystery/drama/love story, Sahsu (Serenay Sarikaya) is determined to confront her grandfather, who left her mother behind years ago in Adana. On this journey, she finds herself in the middle of an unusual and mysterious community called Mar, descended from Shahmaran. Believing in the legend of Shahmaran, one of the greatest symbols of love and wisdom, the Mar race awaits the completion of the historical prophecy with the arrival of Sahsu, and nothing will be the same again when her path crosses with Maran’s (Burak Deniz).

Female Detectives — Part 3: Rogue Females TCM, beginning at 8pm Catch a Classic! Turner Classic Movies concludes its Friday evening salute to fictional female film detectives this evening with four films. First is Lured (1947), a film noir offering a change of pace for fans of Lucille Ball who are accustomed to seeing her in more comedic roles. Ball plays an American in London who helps police find a serial killer after her friend disappears. George Sanders, Charles Coburn and Boris Karloff costar in director Douglas Sirk’s mystery. Next, in Wanted! Jane Turner (1936), both criminals and two postal investigators (played by Gloria Stuart and Lee Tracy) are intent on locating the “Jane Turner” to whom a letter and loads of cash were sent in the wake of a mail robbery. Following that is one of the earliest noir films, Stranger on the Third Floor (1940), in which Margaret Tallichet plays the fiancée of a reporter (John McGuire) who is arrested following two murders; in an attempt to clear his name, she seeks out a strange man (Peter Lorre) who seems linked to the crimes. Finally, in Deadline at Dawn (1946), Susan Hayward plays a dance-hall girl who embarks on an eventful evening as she helps a soon-to-ship-out sailor (Bill Williams) find the person who murdered a woman he had met earlier.

Fire Country: “Mama Bear” CBS, 9pm A former inmate firefighter harboring a grudge against Sharon (Diane Farr) returns to carry out his revenge in the new episode “Mama Bear.”

Kindred Spirits Travel Channel, 9pm; also streams on discovery+ Season Premiere! Paranormal investigators Amy Bruni and Adam Berry, along with psychic medium Chip Coffey, return for Season 7 of their creepy series, which features 10 episodes beginning with “Broken Spirits.” The team visits a former poorhouse in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, where rumors of torture tarnish an already dreadful history. The facility is now a cultural center, but intense paranormal activity terrifies employees and guests. Can the team rectify the horrors of the past and bring peace to this haunted place?

Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom: “Gorilla Divemaster” Nat Geo, 10pm A western lowland gorilla takes a road trip to receive pioneering hyperbaric oxygen therapy; a black rhinoceros is fitted with a fitness tracker to study his movements; the veterinary team investigates what might be causing a roan antelope to lose weight drastically; and the Galapagos tortoises celebrate their 10th birthdays with a wild party.

The Wedding Veil Journey Hallmark Channel, 8pm Original Film! In the last of three sequel films to the Hallmark original Wedding Veil trilogy (based on a book series by Lori Wilde), Tracy (Alison Sweeney) and Nick (Victor Webster) head to Greece for a long-overdue honeymoon. When a travel delay causes them to lose their hotel room, they get an opportunity to stay on a nearby remote island.

Bad Behind Bars: Jodi Arias Lifetime, 8pm Original Film! This follow-up to one of Lifetime’s most successful true-crime movies shows a new side of the infamous murderess. Celina Sinden stars as Jodi Arias, who has just been arrested and sent to prison while she awaits trial for murdering her boyfriend, Travis Alexander. When she arrives in jail, Jodi charms her way through prison and befriends a couple, Donavan Bering and Tracy Brown, who will do almost anything for her. Donavan was released from prison as Jodi’s trial drew near and agreed to be Jodi’s mouthpiece, posting on her social pages and defending her friend to the world. But when the details of the case and Jodi’s story were no longer adding up and Donavan refused to continue to do her former friend’s bidding, Jodi’s vengeful side emerged.

Harlow & Powell TCM, beginning at 8pm Catch a Classic! Hollywood golden age icons Jean Harlow and William Powell had not only a dynamic chemistry onscreen in the two films they made together, but also a real-life love affair that only lasted a couple of years before Harlow tragically passed away from kidney failure in 1937 at the age of 26. Tonight on Turner Classic Movies, you can enjoy the magic they brought to the screen in Reckless (1935), a musical comedy directed by Victor Fleming and also starring frequent Harlow costar Franchot Tone; and Libeled Lady (1936), the Best Picture Oscar-nominated romantic comedy costarring Myrna Loy and Spencer Tracy.

Rico to the Rescue: “Our Contractor Is at the Neighbors” HGTV, 9pm The Raskin family loves their contractor, but, 15 months later, his lack of focus has stalled progress and, with a half-finished renovation including live wiring and ongoing construction, they now feel unsafe living in their home. They call builder Rico León to get their project back on track and help convince the contractor to finish some of the long-overdue work.

Saturday Night Live: “Aubrey Plaza/Sam Smith” NBC, 11:30pm Live; also livestreams on Peacock New Episodes! SNL resumes its 48th season tonight with actress Aubrey Plaza making her guest-hosting debut, accompanied by Sam Smith in their third appearance as musical guest.
