Merlin Trials, small puzzles devised by the famed wizard, are dotted around Hogwarts Legacy – over 50 by our last count. Aside from the simple pleasure of solving them, they also grant gear slots via the Challenges menu, useful given how many robes, hats, and gloves you’ll pick up during your adventure.
Merlin Trials exist in several different formats, which, at first, may seem complex, but once you’ve mastered each one, the solution is always the same. Most of these variations typically require the use of a specific spell on parts of the environment near the Merlin Trial platform. You can tell what you need to interact with by casting Revelio – the puzzle parts will glow blue.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to solve each of the Merlin Trials in Hogwarts Legacy. To start a Merlin Trial, approach the trial platform on the ground where you’ll be prompted to use Mallowsweet Leaves to begin the puzzle.

Stack the Five Stone Balls Merlin Trial
For this Merlin Trial puzzle, you need to use Accio to pull five balls and stack them onto a set of platforms near the trial platform. There are three platforms, each with four slots (the last ball sits on top); their locations usually form a triangle around the Merlin Trial platform.
Shoot the Globes Sitting on Plinths Merlin Trial
To solve this Merlin Trial, shoot down nine globes on plinths scattered around the trial stone platform. You can use a basic cast or a spell like Confringo. If you’re having a hard time tracking down the globes, use Revelio and remember to look up and behind rocks and boulders.
Break the 5 Stone Slabs Merlin Trial
To solve this Merlin Trials puzzle, destroy the five large breakable stone slabs positioned in a circle around the Merlin Trial marker. A spell like Confringo works well.
Light Three Braziers Merlin Trial
For this variation of the Merlin Trials, you need to light three braziers using a spell like Confgringo sitting on stone plinths in quick succession to solve the puzzle. Once lit, the plinths start to descend into the ground, and the flame will peter when it hits the ground. They are typically positioned across quite a large area, so you’ll need to be tactical about the order you light them. The size of the columns also differs, so we recommend working your way backward from the largest to the smallest to give you as much time as possible.
Guide the Moths to the Stones Merlin Trial
To solve this Merlin Trial format, you’ll need to guide three clusters of glowing moths using Lumio to three stones with a crystal encased inside dotted around the trial marker. The statues are typically quite close to the marker. The moths appear as flittering clusters a little further away.
Move the Large Stone Ball to the Sunken Platform Merlin Trial
The key to solving this Merlin Trial puzzle is using the Depulso spell to move a large stone ball to a sunken stone dip. There’s usually a reasonable distance between the two, so use Revelio to find them. The path is often downhill or across a bridge, for example, so don’t hesitate to search further afield than you would for the other Merlin Trials in Hogwarts Legacy. Another good tip is that the stone balls are usually positioned higher up than the sunken platform, so look up hills and on cliffs.
Obstacle Course Merlin Trial
For this trial, you’ll need to cross an obstacle course consisting of several raised platforms or columns. Start from the first and jump across to the last without falling to complete the trial. The course is usually simple and shouldn’t prove too challenging.
Fix The Statues Merlin Trial
Dotted around the trial are crumbled statues. Cast Reparo on each in succession to patch them up. If you’re having trouble finding them all, remember to cast Revelio to highlight the broken statues in blue.
